Volunteer call for summer games ramps up

With national volunteer week underway, in Lloydminster, a big push is getting over 1,000 volunteers for the upcoming Saskatchewan Summer Games, July 21-27.

The Lloydminster Public Library has joined the effort by making its computers available for people to come in and sign up.

The local organizing committee held a 100 Days Away event at the LloydMall on Friday to drum up support. Some 250 volunteers have already signed and some 700 are still needed.

Mayor Gerald Aalbers spoke about some facility upgrades that will come before the games as the city is spending $500,000 on sports, recreation equipment, and other amenities as a legacy investment.

“It’s an improvement that’s a value-added investment, and if there are proceeds left from the games when all the dust settles, that will be legacy funds, that will be (allocated) to more sport improvements,” said Aalbers.

The upgrades include:

  • VLA Soccer Fields – Irrigation
  • VLA Soccer Fields – Change room/Washrooms
  • Bud Miller All Seasons Park Beach Volleyball Courts
  • A portable sports court surface and portable bleachers that are to be purchased by the city

To rally locals to be community ambassadors and volunteer for the games, organizers invite people to contact them via their social media or the Sask Summer Games website.
