Alberta’s Ashley Callingbull who was born on the Enoch Cree Nation will represent Canada at the next Miss Universe in Mexico in November.
Ashely is 34 years old and married. She becomes the first Indigenous, married woman to win the Miss Universe Canada title and the oldest since the upper age limit of 28-years was removed after the last Miss Universe contest in The Philippines.
In the Canadian contest, the eldest was 58-years-old, and by comparison, Argentina’s contest featured a 60-year-old lawyer who was acknowledged as “best face.”
The TV-host, actress, and mentor was the keynote speaker in 2023 for the Economic Partnership Summit in Lloydminster.
Callingbull who won the Canadian leg on Saturday, July 27 in Windsor, Ontario has broken other ceilings in the past becoming the first Indigenous woman to capture Mrs. Universe in 2015 and grace Sports Illustrated in 2022.
At the costume pageant, Ashley wore a piece inspired by the bald eagle and designed by Patrick Isorena.
Upon winning the title, Callingbull said on social media, “Representation truly matters because when one of us wins, we all win.”
The changed criteria for Miss Universe will also see pregnant, lesbian, and trans women being able to enter for the first time.
