Alberta investing in regional agriculture society assessment

Regional agriculture societies including Lloydminster will be going through a sustainability assessment that will look at the importance they have in Alberta.

The province announced the assessment on Wednesday, saying they hired Deloitte to do the assessment, and it will look at the seven different regional agricultural societies, including Grande Prairie, Lethbridge, Lloydminster, Olds, Red Deer, Camrose, and Medicine Hat. These organizations for the majority are made up of volunteers who are passionate and care about their community. Some of the work done by these groups includes educational programs and putting together major or special community events.

According to Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, RJ Sigurdson these regional societies play an important part in the province and have seen numerous changes since being established over 100 years ago.

“Now we need to understand their challenges and opportunities to better position our agriculture sector and rural communities for success,” Sigurdson says.

Funding for the study will come from the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership’s Resiliency and Public Trust program.
