Overdose uptick raises red flags

Concern is mounting as a batch of illicit drugs is raising red flags in Saskatoon and could be spreading across the Prairies.

Lloydminster RCMP is joining the list of agencies to issue caution.

“Based on the close proximity, I would say that the risk is very real, that these drugs could end up in the Lloydminster area. Although we cannot specifically determine the origin of the drugs, our members have dealt with several overdoses today alone,” said Sgt. Brad Mouland.

The SHA warned about a “heightened risk of overdose and death from illicit drugs” in the Bridge City.

“Over the past week, the Saskatoon Fire Department has responded to an average of 19 overdoses per day. The latest Drug Alert issued by the Ministry of Health indicates that the Saskatoon Fire Department responded to 37 overdoses from March 5 to March 6,” said the SHA.

The Hope Street Team and other community groups that lead outreach in Lloydminster caution people to be on alert. The Hope Street Team is grateful for a gift of Naloxone nasal sprays from the Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation Clinic.

A list of locations to obtain free Naloxone kits in Lloydminster is available online.

More information on testing strips, seeking recovery and drug alerts is available online.
