The annual Battle of the Badges hockey game on Mar. 15 has raised $4,283 in cash for Big Brothers Big Sisters and 2,903 kilograms in food donations for local food banks.
Named to honour former Fire Chief Todd Gustavson, the fundraiser put police and fire crews on the ice in a friendly rivalry with community supporters stepping up for the cause.
The cash goes to support mentorship programs for youth, while the food is shared between the Salvation Army Lloydminster and The Olive Tree to help local families and individuals.
Taking the bragging rights on the ice were the law officers winning 7-5 over the fire crews.
“It was a close game, and we’re proud to take home the win this year—but more importantly, we’re proud of what this event accomplishes for the community. The support from everyone who attended and donated makes a real difference. Thank you to all who contributed to another successful Battle of the Badges,” said Cst. Melanie Flynn, Lloydminster RCMP.
The result was a welcomed turn around for the RCMP after they fell to the Fire Department last year 5-4.
“This event is a great reminder of the power of coming together as a community. While we didn’t come out on top this year, the real victory is in the generosity and support we saw from everyone involved. Thank you to all who helped make this year’s Battle of the Badges a success, we look forward to what next year will bring,” said Kris Hill, Assistant Fire Chief, Lloydminster.
