Alberta’s Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation launched the provincial government’s ‘Buy Local’ campaign on Monday in Edmonton.
RJ Sigurdson notes that this campaign will complement the ‘Made in Alberta’ voluntary food and beverage labeling program to support local agriculture and food sectors that the province began in March of 2023. He says, “more than 800 locally made products display the label in Alberta stores, and the Association continues to build momentum to further expand the program. The ‘Buy Local’ campaign draws attention to these local products, making it easier for consumers to choose local.”
He highlights the fact that it is administered by the Alberta Food Processors Association to help shoppers quickly identify food and beverages that are made right here in our province.
Sigurdson says, “Let’s make sure that when we say we support local, we do so with our actions and with our dollars. To those of you that have already been making an effort to make sure you are buying local products, thank you.. and to those who have not, I encourage you to start.”
Also, during Monday’s media conference, Sigurdson pointed out that they are pleased that the recent U.S. announcement about tariffs did not include the ag industry. However, he adds, this is still a critical time for our province as well as our farmers, ranchers, processors, and their families. Sigurdson says they will keep advocating for our ag industry.
